Write & Shine: Ways of Seeing – Cecil Beaton (Online)

Start your day with a burst of creativity!

Join Write & Shine bright and early, live from The London Library for a 90-minute virtual writing workshop that takes inspiration from the glorious fashion photographer and costume designer Cecil Beaton.

Cecil Beaton (1904-80) joined the Library as a member in the 1940s. He crafted elegant, intricate portraits with his camera and his pen: he would take photographs while talking with his sitters a great deal and later recording his observations. We’ll spend the morning writing in response to images by Beaton, exploring his love of theatre and distinctive visual style.

This workshop is part of a series of morning writing sessions, led by author Gemma Seltzer, exploring the connections between image, writing and seeing in the work of former members of The London Library, as inspired by John Berger’s seminal book Ways of Seeing.

Write & Shine workshops takes place in the early morning light - the best time to think, dream and imagine! You won’t be expected to share your writing, which offers great freedom and encourages all kinds of fascinating ideas to emerge.

Login at 7.30am for 7.45am start. You will be sent a Zoom link a few days before the workshop (if you do not receive it, please check your junk file or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
