Character/Place: Short Story Writing Masterclass with Leone Ross (In person)
We’re teaming up with Word Factory, the national short story organisation, to bring you a series of inspiring writing masterclasses from the atmospheric spaces of The London Library. This first session, taught by novelist and short story writer Leone Ross, will consider character, place and the relationship between the two.
The places we live in impact our behaviour and development, affect our decision making, and help create our deepest held beliefs. Environment has a direct effect on character, and character is at the heart of the best short stories! From clothing to demeanour, from social systems to flora and fauna, Leone will take you through a series of thought-provoking exercises and mini-lectures that help you conceive of a world and the short stories inside it.
The workshop will run from 10am to 1pm at the Library and all participants will receive a complimentary London Library day ticket (worth £20) so that you can continue writing or using the Library until it closes at 5.30pm. A guided tour of the Library will be on offer after the workshop for anyone who wants to explore. Tea and coffee will be provided throughout the workshop.
Leone Ross is a novelist, short story writer, editor and reviewer. She has taught creative writing for more than 30 years, from Cardiff University to the Arvon Foundation. Her short story work has been nominated for the Edge Hill Prize and the Jhalak Prize and her 2021 novel This One Sky Day for the Goldsmiths Prize and the Women’s Prize for Fiction.
