Under the Covers: Alan Hollinghurst (In person)

Ella Berthoud brings her illuminating Under the Covers series of talks back to The London Library, with one of our finest novelists, Alan Hollinghurst.

Alan Hollinghurst’s latest novel Our Evenings, is a dark, luminous and wickedly funny portrait of modern England through the lens of one man’s acutely observed and often unnerving experience. It is a story of race and class, theatre and sexuality, love and the cruel shock of violence, described by the Sunday Times as ‘the best novel that’s been written about contemporary Britain in the past ten years.’

Joining bibliotherapist Ella Berthoud on the metaphorical couch, Hollinghurst discusses this novel and the incredible body of award-winning and groundbreaking work that preceded it. He’ll also delve into the reading that has shaped and inspired him throughout his life, before being delivered his bibliotherapeutic analysis and prescription.

Alan Hollinghurst is the author of seven novels, The Swimming-Pool LibraryThe Folding StarThe SpellThe Line of BeautyThe Stranger’s ChildThe Sparsholt Affair and Our Evenings. He has received the Somerset Maugham Award, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction and the 2004 Man Booker Prize.

Ella Berthoud is a bibliotherapist, artist and co-author of The Novel Cure: An A-Z of Literary Remedies. She has been prescribing literary cures to readers everywhere for many years.
