Rogues and Scholars: James Stourton on the London art market 1945-2000

Library member James Stourton first joined Sotheby’s UK in 1979, rising to become its Chair before stepping down in 2012 after more than 30 years in the business.

In 2024, he published Rogues and Scholars: Boom and Bust in the London Art Market 1945-2000.

Join us for the story of the London art market from the post-war period to the turn of the millennium, introducing us to a rogues' gallery of clever amateurs, eccentric scholars, brilliant émigrés, cockney traders and establishment figures with a flair for the deal.
